How often is the KCET exam conducted in a year?
KCET is conducted only once a year, typically in mid-to-late April over two consecutive days. Unlike JEE Main, there are no multiple sessions or winter editions. If you miss or want to retake KCET, you must wait for the next annual cycle.
How many times can I write KCET? Is there an attempt limit?
There is no limit on the number of attempts for KCET. Droppers and repeaters can appear as many times as they wish, provided they satisfy the academic qualification (10+2 / 2nd PUC with Physics and Mathematics). There is also no upper age limit for engineering admissions.
Does a gap year or repeater status reduce my KCET rank or impose penalties?
No. KEA does not deduct any marks or impose rank penalties for repeaters or droppers. Your rank is calculated using the exact same 50:50 composite formula (50% Board PCM + 50% KCET marks) as fresh candidates.
How does Karnataka's 2nd PUC Exam 1, Exam 2, and Exam 3 system work with KCET?
Karnataka Board conducts three exams (Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3) for 2nd PUC students. If a student appears for Exam 2 or Exam 3 and scores higher in PCM subjects, KEA opens a special marks-entry portal. KEA accepts the best marks obtained across the attempts, recalculates the 50:50 composite score, and issues a revised rank card before or during extended counselling.
Is KCET conducted online or offline?
Offline (pen-and-paper). Candidates mark their responses on physical optical mark reader (OMR) sheets using blue or black ballpoint pens across 745+ exam centres in Karnataka.
Is there negative marking in KCET?
No. Each correct question awards 1 mark. There is zero negative marking for incorrect or unattempted questions, so candidates should attempt every question.
How does the 50:50 composite ranking formula work?
Your engineering rank is calculated from a 50:50 equal weightage: 50% from your 2nd PUC / Class 12 PCM board percentage (out of 300) plus 50% from your KCET score (out of 180). Both are normalized into percentages and averaged: (PUC% + KCET%) / 2.
Which subjects do I need to take for engineering?
Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (60 marks each, total 180 marks). Candidates also keeping pharmacy, veterinary, or farm science options open typically also sit for the Biology paper.
Do KCET and NEET-UG serve the same purpose?
No. KCET is for engineering, architecture, pharmacy, agriculture, and veterinary courses. State-quota medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) seats in Karnataka are allotted through KEA counselling, but eligibility and merit are based 100% on NEET-UG scores, not KCET.
How many counselling rounds does KCET have?
KEA conducts three main centralized rounds: Round 1 (including a Mock Allotment), Round 2, and Round 3 (Second Extended / Final Round). In 2026, Round 1 completed in July, Round 2 in late August, and Round 3 concluded on September 11, 2026.
What is the Supernumerary Quota (SNQ) and who qualifies?
SNQ is a 5% additional quota in every college branch where 100% of the tuition fee is waived. Annual family income must be under ₹8.00 Lakhs, verified via a valid Karnataka Nadakacheri Income Certificate (RD number). It is available to all categories based purely on KCET merit.
Can candidates from outside Karnataka take KCET?
Yes, under the outside-Karnataka / All-India candidate category (Type-B/C/D depending on parent roots). They are eligible for a separate quota of seats at private and unaided colleges, with an application fee of ₹750 (within India) or ₹5,000 (overseas).
Can I participate in KCET and COMEDK counselling at the same time?
Yes. KCET (government and institutional quota) and COMEDK (private consortium quota) are entirely separate admission systems with independent portals, merit lists, and choice-filling schedules. You can hold or upgrade options on both until you make a final reporting decision.
