KCET eligibility criteria

Eligibility for KCET has three primary pillars: academic qualification, Karnataka candidature category (which determines state-quota reservation eligibility), and age/attempt regulations.

Exam frequency and attempt limits

Two of the most frequent questions from prospective candidates and parents are how often the exam is held and whether repeat attempts are permitted:

• How often is KCET held? KCET is conducted strictly once a year, typically in mid-to-late April across two days. Unlike JEE Main, there is no winter session or second attempt within the same calendar year. If a candidate misses KCET, they must register for the following year's annual cycle.
• Is there an attempt limit? No. There is no ceiling on the number of attempts for KCET. Candidates who wish to take a drop year or improve their rank can write KCET multiple times without restriction.
• Is there an upper age limit? For B.E. / B.Tech engineering courses, KEA imposes no upper age limit. (Certain allied healthcare and pharmacy courses mandate a minimum age of 17 years by December 31 of the admission year).
• Are repeaters / droppers penalised? No. KEA does not deduct marks or reduce ranks for repeat candidates. The 50:50 composite ranking formula (50% Board PCM + 50% KCET marks) is applied identically to both fresh 12th-standard students and drop-year candidates.

How Karnataka's 2nd PUC 3-Exam System affects KCET

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) conducts three state board examinations each year: Exam 1 (Annual, March), Exam 2 (May), and Exam 3 (July).

• Candidates who wish to improve their Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics marks can appear for Exam 2 or Exam 3.
• KEA permits candidates to submit their highest achieved marks across any of the three board exams.
• When improved marks are uploaded via KEA's special marks-entry portal, KEA recalculates the candidate's 50:50 merit composite and releases a revised/supplementary rank card, allowing upgraded participation in subsequent counselling rounds.

Academic qualification and minimum marks

• Passed 2nd PUC / Class 12 (or an equivalent examination recognised by Karnataka State) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, alongside Chemistry, Biology, Electronics, Computer Science, or an equivalent technical vocational subject.
• Candidates awaiting 2nd PUC / Class 12 results at registration can apply and upload their marks card later during KEA's dedicated document entry window.
• Minimum aggregate in PCM qualifying subjects: 45% for General Merit candidates, relaxed to 40% for SC, ST, Category-1, and OBC (2A, 2B, 3A, 3B) candidates.

Candidature categories & Karnataka residency

Karnataka's reservation framework for KCET determines whether you qualify for subsidized government and institutional quota seats:

• Karnataka Candidates (Clause A): The primary eligibility clause — candidates who have studied in government or recognised educational institutions in Karnataka for a minimum of 7 full academic years between Class 1 and Class 12/2nd PUC, and have appeared for Class 10 (SSLC) or Class 12 (PUC) from Karnataka.
• Karnataka Candidates via Parents (Clauses B, C, D, E): Candidates whose parents have resided in Karnataka for at least 7 years, or are state/central government employees, defence personnel, or ex-servicemen stationed in Karnataka.
• Hyderabad-Karnataka / Kalyana-Karnataka (Article 371(J)): Candidates from the 7 Kalyana-Karnataka districts (Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Ballari, and Vijayanagara). This provides a massive reservation benefit: 70% of seats in regional colleges and 8% of state-quota seats across all other engineering and medical institutions in Karnataka. The local eligibility certificate (Annexure-A) is issued by the Assistant Commissioner of Revenue through the Seva Sindhu / Nadakacheri portal.
• Horanadu and Gadinadu Kannadiga (Clauses M & N): Candidates of Kannada-speaking heritage residing outside Karnataka (Horanadu) or in border regions (Gadinadu), who must qualify the 50-mark Kannada Language Test (minimum 12 marks). Candidates who completed 10 full years of schooling in Kannada medium outside the state are exempt from the test.
• All-India / Non-Karnataka Candidates: Eligible for a dedicated pool of open/management quota seats at private engineering institutions through KEA, with an application fee of ₹750 (domestic) or ₹5,000 (overseas).

Supernumerary Quota (SNQ) Eligibility

Under the AICTE Supernumerary Quota, 5% extra seats are allocated in every engineering branch with 100% Tuition Fee Waiver. Any candidate whose total annual family income is under ₹8.00 Lakhs (supported by an authentic Tahsildar-issued Nadakacheri Income Certificate with RD number) is automatically considered for SNQ seats during option entry across all reservation categories.
