Karnataka is one of India's preeminent technical education powerhouses, hosting over 260+ engineering colleges. Until 1998, engineering colleges in Karnataka were affiliated to regional conventional universities like Bangalore University, Mysore University, and Karnatak University.

This fragmentation resulted in uneven curricula, disparate examination schedules, and non-standardized evaluation standards across institutions. To harmonize engineering education across the state, the Government of Karnataka enacted the VTU Act of 1994, officially establishing Visvesvaraya Technological University in Belagavi on April 1, 1998.

SNQ (Supernumerary Quota)

5% extra seats created over and above the sanctioned intake in every branch. Annual family income must be under ₹8.0 Lakhs. Candidates pay only nominal university fees (₹17,910 – ₹32,320), saving over ₹85,000/year in tuition.

Article 371(J) Hyderabad-Karnataka

Special reservation for candidates belonging to the 6 backward districts (Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Bellary/Vijayanagara). 70% seats reserved in HK region colleges, and 8% seats statewide in all other colleges.

Rural (GMR) & Kannada Medium (GMK)

15% horizontal reservation for candidates who studied 10 full academic years in rural Karnataka. 5% horizontal reservation for candidates who studied in Kannada medium schools from 1st to 10th standard.
