A parent's guide to surviving KCET season

Published 10 August 2026

KCET season is stressful for parents too, often in a different way than it is for the student. You’re tracking dates, worrying about fees, and wanting to help, sometimes without a clear sense of how. Here’s where parents genuinely make a difference, and where it’s easy to accidentally add pressure instead.

Where you actually help

Own the paperwork. Documents like caste certificates, income certificates and domicile proof often need to be arranged well in advance and can take weeks to process through government offices. This is a logistics job, and taking it off your child’s plate during exam preparation is one of the most concretely useful things a parent can do. See the counselling document checklist for what’s typically needed.

Track dates so they don’t have to. Bookmark KCET’s important dates page or this site’s exam calendar yourself, so reminders come from you rather than your child needing to constantly check.

Ask about the financial picture honestly, early. If cost is going to be a factor in which colleges are realistic, have that conversation before choice-filling, not during it. Also worth checking together: many families qualify for real scholarship and fee-reimbursement schemes they don’t know exist.

Be the calm reference point during choice filling. This is the single highest-pressure moment of the whole process. Help your child think through priorities calmly rather than pushing your own ranked list. Use how to fill KCET choices strategically together, as a starting point for the conversation rather than a verdict.
