DCET explained: how diploma holders enter engineering via lateral entry

If you’ve completed, or are finishing, a diploma in engineering from a Karnataka polytechnic, DCET is the exam that lets you skip straight into the second year of a B.E./B.Tech degree. There’s no need to repeat the first year you’ve effectively already covered in your diploma.
What “lateral entry” means
Most engineering students enter through KCET straight from PUC/Class 12, and start at the first year of a four-year degree. Lateral entry, via DCET, places diploma holders directly into the second year, recognising that a three-year engineering diploma already covers foundational content equivalent to a degree’s first year. It’s a shorter path to the same B.E./B.Tech qualification.
Who it’s for
DCET is aimed at candidates who:
- Have completed, or are in the final year of, a diploma in engineering from a recognised polytechnic
- Want to continue directly into a related engineering degree branch, rather than starting a fresh four-year program from year one

Both exams are run by the same body and follow a broadly similar shape: online application, a written entrance exam, and centralised counselling for seat allotment. They serve entirely different candidate pools, though, and lead into the degree at different points.
Why diploma holders choose this path
The most common reason is time and continuity. A diploma-to-degree route via DCET generally reaches the same B.E./B.Tech qualification faster than starting over at first year through KCET, while still landing at a recognised engineering degree. It also lets diploma holders specialise further in a related, or sometimes different, engineering branch at the degree level.
What to check before applying
Not every diploma branch maps cleanly onto every degree branch, and seat availability for lateral entry is generally smaller than first-year intake. Before counselling, it’s worth shortlisting which degree branches your specific diploma branch is eligible for, and checking seat availability at your target colleges.
